Advantages of aluminium in the railway sector

The use of aluminium substantially reduces the unladen weight of the train carriages. This makes it possible to increase the payload capacity for the same total weight. This results in improved serviceability of locomotives and wagons.

For this reason, aluminium has a strong presence in the railway sector. In addition, the higher market value and end-of-life value of trains made of aluminium also means the possibility of increased revenue from its disposal. This is due to the capacity of aluminium to be recycled countless times while maintaining the same properties and with energy savings of around 95% compared to the use of primary aluminium.

Aluminium alloys can be as strong as steel at one-third the weight, making it a suitable material for many different vehicle components.

Corrosion resistance

The oxide layer that naturally coats aluminium gives it an effective barrier to the elements compared to other metals. Specially produced and treated alloys are available to increase this corrosion resistance.

Recyclability

Aluminium is 100% recyclable using only 5% of the energy required to produce the primary product. Currently, approximately 95% of the aluminium used in vehicles is recycled and accounts for around 50% of its material value at the end of its useful life.

The low density of aluminium compared to other metals has great advantages in the transport sector. Any type of vehicle, being lighter, requires less energy to move without compromising safety or comfort. On the other hand, for the same total weight, a lighter vehicle allows more cargo to be transported at once.

The standard delivery length is 6,050 mm. On request we can supply to final size.

The standard finish in stock is rough manufactured. An anodised or lacquered finish can be supplied to order in minimum quantities.


Features

The usual alloy in stock is Simagaltok 60-EN AW 6060. Some references can also be found in Simagaltok 63-EN AW 6063 alloy as well as Simagaltok 82-EN AW 6082.

This alloy is extruded according to EN 755-2, EN 755-9 and EN 573-3.

ALUMINIUM LAMINATES

We have more than 350 references in stock of sheets and plates in thicknesses from 0.5 to 200 mm and in all commercial formats with widths up to 2,000 and lengths up to 6,000. We have the commercial alloy indicated for each use.

In addition, we have a cutting service in formats and the possibility of cutting to size.

Special alloys: We have stock in alloys 5454 H34 and 5083H32.

SPECIAL PROFILES

If we combine the excellent properties and characteristics of aluminium with the possibility of forming it into practically unlimited shapes by means of the extrusion process, we obtain the opportunity to obtain tailor-made products that are completely optimised for the required application.
 

Extrusion is a production process that allows us to obtain products of complex shapes, in an integral way, with low tolerances and with a minimum investment in relation to productivity.

PLA 3D printing

Our extensive knowledge of aluminium and its alloys, as well as the operation of the transformation processes and the design specifications that affect it, allow us to offer the customer customised solutions for the production of custom-designed profiles.

We have the possibility of making prototypes of the profiles by means of 3D printing in PLA.

With this, we facilitate the formal verification of the profiles prior to their manufacture.

ALUMINIUM CONNECTORS

We have a wide range of cast aluminium connectors for round tubes of various diameters, to make all types of connections between one or more tubes.
  • Finishes: These fittings can be supplied in lacquered or anodised finishes.
  • Sizes: There are solutions for tubes of Ø30, Ø1″, Ø35, Ø40, Ø1 ¼”, Ø45, Ø1 ½”, Ø50 and Ø60.
